Davyhulme Camera Club - Competition Rules

1 General Competition Rules

• All competitions are held annually except for the regular slide and print competitions,
which are held four times every year

• Most competitions are open subject, the exceptions being The Annual Set Subject
and The Arthur Bowers Landscape Competitions

• Entries are only accepted from fully paid up members of Davyhulrne Camera Club

• All entries are to be the personal work of the competitor, with the exceptions
described by the competition title eg Trade Processed Colour Print Competition

• No single entry is to be entered in more than one competition

• Any slide entered into a competition cannot be used in another single slide
competition, however it may be used to produce a print or as part of a Related Set or
Audio-Visual presentation

• Any restrictions on the number of entries will be announced before each competition
(except for regular Slide and Print competitions which are fixed)

• All entries are to be handed to the Competition Secretary or deputy one week before
the competition or any period determined by the committee. Any entry is liable to
disqualification if it does not strictly comply with all the rules

• All entries are to be made available for the annual exhibition if requested
• Unless indicated differently in the individual competition rules, all entries must have
been taken within the 5 years prior to the competition

• Annual competition winners may purchase a plaque for their permanent retention via
the Internal Competition Secretary

 General Rules for Prints

• All prints are to be mounted and the mounting and titling must be personally carried
out by the entrant, even for trade processed prints

• The size restrictions are as follows:-
Regular and Club Events Competitions - mounts must be 25cm (10") on one side by a
maximum of 20cm (8")
In all other print competitions, the minimum mount size is 25cm (10") by 20cm (8");
the maximum mount size is 50cm (20") by 40cm (16").

• The photographer must have taken the images submitted and have the full copyright
of all elements at their disposal. Digital images are welcome in competitions, providing
the photographer carried out all manipulation, and that the photographer took the
original exposure/s. Images constructed from so called royalty free and copyright
free images to which nobody owns the copyright are not acceptable.

General Rules for Slides

• All slide competitions are limited to 2" by 2" slide mounts

• All slides must be correctly spotted and preferably titled; glass mounts are preferred
and must be used for the Related Sets and Audio-Visual Competitions

• Home processed and trade processed slides are accepted; masking is permitted.

2 Specific Rules

Annual Print Competitions i.e. Monochrome home processed; Home processed colour;
Trade processed colour prints - digitally printed entries may fall into any of these
categories

• The competitor’s name, print title and the name of the competition are to be clearly
marked on the reverse of the print

• The number of entries allowed is unlimited unless otherwise indicated by the
committee

• See the General Rules (above) for print sizes and other requirements

• The competitor entering the winning print will be awarded the trophy indicated below;
the trophy is retained for 12 months:-

Monochrome Home Processed Print Competition           The Lawrence Morrissey Challenge Shield

Home Processed Colour Print Competition                    The Flixton Shield

Trade Processed Colour Print Competition                   The Urmston Shield

Set Subject Print Competition                                    The Frank Hey Memorial Rosebowl

Club Events Print Competition                                    The Jack Walters Memorial Salver

Regular Slide and Print (Quarterly) Competitions

• Up to 3 entries are allowed in both the slide and print sections of each of the four
competitions. If the entrant or their spouse/partner is judging one of the regular
competitions, they may enter up to 4 entries of the other three competitions

• The competitor’s name is not to appear on the print or slide

• See the General Rules for print size

• Plaques are awarded to the winners of the print and slide sections of these
competitions, to be retained until the next Regular Competition

• Entries for the Regular Print Competition may also be entered into the Annual
Competitions, but would need to conform to the size requirements of these 
competitions - see General Rules (above)

Set Subject Slide and Print Competitions

• The subject of the competition is announced by the committee no later than 9 months
prior to the date of the competition

• All slide entries must be taken following the announcement of the subject and must
not have been entered into any other single slide competition or vice versa

• The number of entries is usually limited to 6 slides and/or prints or as indicated by
the committee

• The competitor entering the winning slide is awarded The Davyhulrne Camera Club Cup;
the competitor entering the winning print is awarded The Frank Hey Memorial
Rosebowl, these are retained for 12 months.

Related Sets Colour Slide Competition

• A set consists of 6 slides linked by a common theme, relating to a single title

• All slides are to be marked with the title of the set, competitors name and the order
in which they are to be projected

• For projection reasons, all entries must be mounted in approved (GEPE) glass mounts

• The number of entries allowed is usually 2 sets or as determined by the committee

• The competitor entering the winning set of slides is awarded The Trafford Shield,
which is retained for 12 months.

Audio-Visual Competition

Tape/Slide entries

• These consist of a presentation of 2" by 2" slides which must be glass mounted in

approved (GEPE) glass mounts, accompanied by a taped sound track on standard

cassette

• Slides are to be arranged for dual projection

• The sequence is to be taped for Imatronic pulses or projected by the competitor with
an Imatronic hand control

• Recording must be done using club equipment

Digital entries

• The photographer/s must have taken the original exposures and have carried out all
manipulation

• Entries should be submitted on CD, with only one sequence per Cb

• The sequence should be compiled with a stand-alone .EXE programme eg Pictures to
Exe, GlobFX so that it will run without any additional software

• The CD should not be self starting, and the sequence should be programmed to return
to the desktop at the end

• The mouse cursor should be hidden during the sequence

For both media, the number of entries allowed is usually 2, or as indicated by the 
 committee; the duration of any sequence must not exceed 12 minutes

This is the only competition where an entry may be submitted by a group of members.

The competitor/s submitting the winning presentation will be awarded The Davyhulrne
Trophy, which is retained for 12 months.

Arthur Bowers Landsape Slide Competition

• The subject - landscape- may be given a wide creative interpretation

• The number of entries allowed is usually 6, or as indicated by the committee

• The competitor entering the winning slide is awarded the Arthur Bowers Landscape
Competition Trophy, which is retained for 12 months.

Club Events Slide and Print Competition

• Entries must be either colour slides or home/trade processed prints, which may be
monochrome or colour

• All entries must have been taken whilst participating in a club arranged activity, which
has been designated by the committee for inclusion in this competition

• Unless specified by the committee, the subject matter will be open

• A maximum of 6 slides and 6 prints may be submitted by each member

• The competitor entering the winning slide will be awarded The Nicholas Wood Trophy;
the competitor entering the winning print will be awarded the Jack Walters Memorial
Salver; these trophies will be retained for 12 months.

Additional Information

Presidents Prize

This trophy will be awarded annually to the member who has gained the highest
aggregated score from all slide competitions in the preceding 12 months, excluding the
Club Events and Audio-Visual Competitions; the trophy will be retained for 12 months.

Len Hughes Trophy

This trophy will be awarded annually to the member who has gained the highest
aggregated score from all print competitions in the preceding 12 months, excluding the
Club Events; the trophy will be retained for 12 months.

Points allocation

• All entries for the Regular Slide and Print Competitions will be scored out of 10

• All other competitions that are to be included in the Presidents Prize and/or for the

Len Hughes Trophy will be allocated 2 points per competition entry, with additional
points as follows:-

Winner        8 points                      HC               6 points
